Foundation for Performance Measurement Home Page Information Bulletin

December 1999

The Foundation is a global membership organisation that exists to spread information about business performance measurement in the broadest sense - non-financial as well as financial. It brings together business professionals who are interested in developing practical new ways of measuring performance via: regular meetings on topics of common interest; special interest groups; and an internet site, www.fpm.com, which has an extensive resource library of case studies and presentations.

The Foundation was launched in 1992 by performance visualisation specialists Metapraxis. Founder members included Bob Eccles, whose paper The Performance Measurement Manifesto was published in Harvard Business Review in 1991.

In the Spring, the Implementing and Maintaining Performance Measures Group conducted a research study entitled Linking Performance Measures to Strategy and members are continuing to explore the issues raised by this study at our quarterly meetings. The December meeting picks up the themes of Motivation and Communication. Further details are available separately.

The Non-financial Measures Group is developing an internet-based survey of successful performance measures. The project was launched at our June meeting and is currently in the design stage. The survey will focus on areas such as Customer Satisfaction, Employee Motivation, Productivity & Quality and Innovation, and it is intended that the results will be compiled into an on-line Performance Measurement Dictionary.

Some of our members have expressed an interest in forming a Public Sector Group and any organisation that would like to participate is invited to contact the Foundation Secretary.

In parallel with the special interest group activities, the Secretariat is developing aspects of our internet presence. Ideas proposed by members include an electronic newsletter, to draw members' attention to performance measurement news and events on a world-wide basis and an on-line discussion forum. We hope to launch the new facilities shortly.

Our latest publication is our second annual survey of corporate Annual Reports, which was published in November. The Well-rounded Annual Report analyses the measures of performance published in the reports of the companies in the FTSE 100 index. The study continues to attract publicity for the Foundation in both the management and specialist press, with recent articles appearing in The Times and The Evening Standard.

If you would like to join the UK Chapter of the Foundation, there are three categories of membership: the personal membership fee is £1,500* per annum, corporate membership for a national organisation is £3,750* per annum and corporate membership for a multinational organisation is £10,000* per annum.
